The “Student Body” statue between Manning Hall and Hamilton Hall, was originally in front of Davis Library (in 1990) and immediately became a flash point for its stereotypical depictions of race and gender. The art work was designed by Julia Balk as the 1985 class gift.  An image of the original statue can be found on page 366 in William S. Powell’s The First State University: A Pictorial History of the University of North Carolina 3rd. Ed.
