Under this obelisk is buried the first president of UNC, Joseph Caldwell, as well as his wife and her son.  Note that this is one of two monuments to Caldwell at UNC – the other may be found in the Old Chapel Hill cemetery and it commemorates two of the black Caldwells, November Caldwell and his son Wilson Caldwell (born of a mother who was owned by President Swain, and thus legally surnamed Swain until after the Civil War). Wilson Caldwell was harassed by the KKK in Chapel Hill in 1869.
